This page provides instructions and videos for the Shotokan Karate kihon katas such as Taikyoku Shodan. As you may know, kihon is the Japanese word for basics. Therfore, in Shotokan Karate, kihon kata is used to teach basic kicks, stances, blocks and strikes to entry level students. For example, Taikyoku Shodan teaches basic Shotokan techniques such as the front stance and lunge punch. Kihon kata is usually taught to beginners before they move onto the regular 26 kata of Shotokan Karate. However, be aware that kihon kata are only taught at some Shotokan schools.
For instructions & videos of the traditional 26 Shotokan Karate kata (such as Heian Shodan), please visit Black Belt Wiki’s main Shotokan Kata section. These non-kihon kata are taught to color belt and black belt Shotokan students.
