This page provides details on the stretch known as “Wall Splits”. Wall splits are also known as inverted split stretches, wall straddle stretches, etc. This stretch is a technique used by martial artists to improve lower body flexibility.
A wall split involves a martial artist lying on their back with their legs in the air resting against a wall. This technique uses gravity to help achieve wider side splits. It is used in order to loosen the hips & groin section and thus achieve higher lateral kicks (i.e. higher roundhouse kicks).
All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained martial arts instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. If you have had an injury or are in pain, please see a doctor before starting any stretching or exercise program.
