Kuntao

Kuntao is a southeast Asian martial arts that utilizes hand strikes, kicking techniques, grappling and martial arts weapons (i.e. sword, staff and spear). Kuntao means the “way of the fist”.

This martial arts was originally developed hundreds of years ago in southern China and spread to countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. However, as Kuntao spread outside China, it acquired techniques from the other martial arts in those countries. For example, the Kuntao practiced in Indonesia contains many Silat techniques.

Moreover, this country-focused hybridization has resulted in many differing Kuntao systems and organizations. Each country has developed its own unique Kuntao styles. Therefore, many local Kuntao organizations consider “their” Kuntao as a home-grown martial arts style.
