Pull-Ups – Martial Arts Strength Training

This page looks at the strength training exercise known as “Pull-Ups”. This upper body exercise works primarily on the muscles in the arms, upper back, shoulder muscles, etc. Martial artists use pull-ups in order to improve their martial arts punching and grappling strength.

This exercise involves grabbing a pull-up bar with two hands and lifting yourself off the ground until your head reaches the height of the pull-up bar. A pull-up differs from a chin-up because your palms face outwards when on the bar. In contrast, for a chin-up, your palms face inwards when on the bar.

All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. For more exercises, please visit the main Martial Arts Strength Training page.
