Solo Training – Wrestling & Grappling

Stuck at home by yourself? Here are some solo training ideas for martial artists who practice grappling martial arts such as Wrestling, BJJ, Mixed Martial Arts, Judo, etc. Unfortunately, solo training is occasionally a necessity if you do not have a training partner (i.e. you can’t get to your martial arts school due to a blizzard). For additional ideas & drills, please visit Black Belt Wiki’s main Solo Training – Martial Arts section.

  • Grappling Dummies – Many martial artists use grappling dummies in order to practice grappling techniques when they are by themselves. These static padded dummies usually have arms and legs. Therefore, martial artists use grappling dummies in order to practice throws, submissions, joint locks, etc. Watch the video below for common grappling dummy training drills.
  • Solo Technique Practice – Solo martial artists can practice basic techniques such as sprawling, shrimping, breakfalls, etc. Martial artists do not need a partner in order to work on these techniques. Rather, martial artists often use solo training focused on these techniques in order to improve speed, reaction timing, technique success at different angles and heights, etc. See the videos below.
  • Strength & Conditioning – If stuck at home, many martial artists also work on improving their strength and conditioning. Strength & conditioning training can lead to more powerful grappling techniques, improved sparring stamina, etc. For examples of home strength & conditioning drills, please visit Black Belt Wiki’s section on Martial Arts Strength & Conditioning at Home.
