Oi-Zuki (Lunge Punch) – Karate Punching Technique

Oi-Zuki is a basic punching technique taught by Karate styles such as Shotokan. It is also known in English as a lunge punch, step-in punch, front punch, forward punch, stepping punch, etc. You might also find this Karate technique spelled as Oizuki, Oi-Tsuki, etc. For information on other striking techniques, please visit Black Belt Wiki’s section on Karate Punches.

Oi-Zuki (lunge punch) differs from Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch) in that the punching arm is on the same side as the leg moving forward or that is near the target (i.e. right arm and right leg). In contrast, for Gyaku Zuki, the punching arm is on the opposite side of the leg moving forward or that is near the target (i.e. right arm and left leg). Oi-Zuki is used primarily in kata and kihon. However, it is not frequently used for sparring (kumite) or self-defense applications. This punching technique may vary by Karate style (i.e. required stance length for kata). Therefore, please check with your instructor for the exact technique requirements taught by your school and/or style.

This information is meant to supplement what is taught at Karate schools. To properly understand these techniques, you need to learn them from a certified Karate instructor who can give an in-depth explanation of the technique, correct your mistakes and detail how the technique should be utilized. All martial arts techniques should only be practiced under the supervision of a trained martial arts instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. In addition, all martial arts techniques and training should be used safely and responsibly.
